Answer: When it is a grotesque, of course!
Gargoyles, by definition, are carved figures of stone, with spouts designed to convey water from rooftops to the ground below. Their use, dating back to Greek and Roman times, provided both a decorative and functional method to prevent water from cascading down the sides of temples and other structures with pitched or flat roofs.
